This is Bella with Marisa and French Bulldog Cherri
Health and temperament issues in any breed are very important to any good breeder. We have our dogs tested before we show or breed them for Von Willebrand disease, SA skin punches and hip x-rays, either pre-limb or OFA. Testing is not a guarantee but a guide line to go by. It is just as important to breed older dogs that are still healthy and have had healthy puppies. SA punches show if a dog is negative which is why we do them although quite a few breeders do not as it is not always conclusive. There is very little known about SA in regard to genetics. It can show up in a dog from generations of dogs with no signs of SA. Genetic SA along with other genetic issues show up by the time the dogs are 2 years of age. If a dog has a health issue after 2 years of age it can be from environmental issues or a combination of things which might include over vaccinating, chemicals such as flea and tick treatments, chemicals in dog foods or sprayed on lawns, even a poor diet which could have weakened the immune system.
The things that we can't test for are usually much worse such as bloat, auto immune disease and Addison. Those aren't usually genetic but years of not having these issues show up in a line are a plus and a good way to tell if the dogs are going to be free of them. We, like most of the good breeders out there, care about all of our dogs and hope they are all healthy and happy for their entire lives. We have many, many dogs we have bred that are into the 2 digit numbers which we are thrilled about. We are very proud of our temperaments on our dogs. That is just as important as health and we have wonderful sweet, gentle poodles as they should be. We have a 2 year genetic health replacement guarantee on our puppies.
